Thomas Walley
June Award
We are delighted to stay with the sporting theme this month and present Thomas Walley with one of our monthly @fjonesinitiative Wrexham recognition prizes. Thomas is a 25 years old athlete, born and bred in Wrexham, who competes in Pole Vault for Wales and Wrexham Athletics Club.
Thomas is currently six times Champion of Wales and 5th ranked Welsh Pole-Vaulter of all time, striving to be number 1 of all time in the coming years.
Thomas has been in athletics since around the age of ten, citing his dad as the person to “blame” for getting him into Pole Vaulting. His dad had been involved in athletics for a few years and decided to ask one of the coaches if Thomas could give it a try….
Over ten years later Thomas is representing his country and travelling to various places around the world, to compete and train and absolutely loving it!
Thomas’s personal best is 5.21 metres, an incredible 17 foot!
Thomas trains 5 days a week at both Queensway Stadium in Wrexham and the Sports City facility in Manchester, where he trains with other top pole-vaulters in the UK.
In addition to this Thomas works fulltime as a network engineer at a large telecommunications company for over six years now and he tells us that the company have been incredibly supportive of his talent.
All his training and competitions are self-funded, which is why it is incredibly important that Thomas carefully balances his time, training and working.
If this all wasn’t enough, Thomas manages Wrexham Athletics Club Senior men’s and women’s team that take part in the Northern Track and Field League.
Last year they managed to win the league title and claim promotion!
We wish Thomas every success in the future and will be closely following his quest for the Welsh number one ranking of all time.
Good luck Thomas and very well done with your incredible achievements so far!
