Liz Wilson
April Award
We are delighted to announce the second monthly winner of the 2023/24 Wrexham Recognition Awards, is Liz Wilson
Liz is an award-winning baker, who runs a bakery and bread school in Overton-on- Dee in Wrexham. She started baking seven years ago, in London, took a bread class and fell in love with the stuff. Liz tells us she likes the therapeutic nature bread making. She volunteered in bakeries and cooking schools and baked and baked. She was initially giving away everything she baked until friends said they would be happy to pay. This is how it all started and her business Ma Baker, was born.
Ma Baker opened in Overton, 18 months ago, Liz and her husband had bought a property on Overton High Street, totally renovating the space. The property had been empty, for 20 years. What makes this bakery different is that it is entirely run by Liz, who hand crafts all her bread, which is available for pre-order or direct purchase two days a week.
All her bread is made using tradition methods, organic British flour and locally sourced ingredients.
Liz also runs a range of bread classes, which have no more than four students and are incredibly popular, receiving over 250 five-star reviews. She also teaches and mentors other bakers on how to set up their own micro bakeries. Already, there are 40 new bakers around the country, delivering bread to their local communities, after completing Liz’s course.
Lis also supports the community, teaches bread making in the local primary school and children also come to the bakery to learn. She has spoken at a number of local WI’s about her bread making journey, with all proceeds going to charity, run an online bread class, which raised £3500 for UNICEF Ukraine and donated bread to the local foodbank. Liz was also invited to Downing Street for a showcase of small independent food businesses.
She tells us the Wrexham village of Overton has warmly welcomed the bakery and tell her they are delighted to have another successful business on the High Street.
We are delighted to have Liz as one of our first 2023/24 monthly award winners.
Well done Liz!
P.S. Her bread is AMAZING!
