Bethan Evans

We have great pleasure in recognising Bethan Evans for the volunteering work she does for Wrexham Litter Pickers and her fundraising efforts for her trip to Tanzania next year.

Wrexham Litter Pickers started on face book during the pandemic. It has been a great way to give people something to do that felt positive and useful and enabled them to stay apart. Red bags are used, so that they can be identified and not mistaken for fly-tipping. You can find out lots of information about how it works if you join their Facebook page group.

Bethan is 14 years old and in Year 10 at Ysgol Clywedog. Bethan spent a lot of her time in lockdown fundraising for her trip to Tanzania next year, where she will undertake community and environmental work. In previous years students have helped build up flood defences and painted schools.

They do 3 or 4 different projects, moving around the country for each one depending on what is most needed. Part of the experience starts at home beforehand, with students required to organise fundraising themselves, to pay for the trip. Bethan and her dad regularly go out litter picking for Wrexham Litter Pickers, they compete to see who can pick up the most masks and it’s something mum Elly thinks they have really bonded over.

Bethan recently organised a 12 hour litter pick in Wrexham to raise funds for her trip to Tanzania. She covered nearly 117 miles, collected 18 bags of rubbish as well as 100 masks. She has also been producing artwork and jewellery to sell with a stall at St Giles Church, as well as her sponsored events.

Mum Elly has told us that they have seen Bethan demonstrate independence and tenacity, which was most definitely needed to fundraise through a pandemic. We were particularly impressed that she found such a worthwhile way to do so.

Well done and good luck Bethan!
